Mock Election

Over the last few weeks P.7 have been preparing for, and carrying out, a Mock election.  We were split into the
five main parties; Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats. S.N.P. and Green. We worked very hard making
banners, posters, head and wrist bands, and flags then distributed them around the school.

We studied the policies of each party and wrote our own manifestos. We then filmed each party presenting their manifesto and made this into a video which each class watched. They enjoyed watching these very much.
We held a Hustings for all the parties and on the day before the Vote canvassed  each class to try and win votes.

Election Day came and voting was busy as each class and each pupil was given the chance to cast a vote for who they would like to win.

Each party did their best but when the result was announced in the dinner hall at lunch time the party that
won was... The Conservatives.

The Winners are announced.

Party leaders take a bow.

The Voters hear the results.

We also prepared some questions for Anne Begg. Over the weeks we and learned so much information and have had so
much fun .

The P.7s had a visit from Hazlehead Academy's Depute Rectors Mrs. Bonsall and Mr. Robertson. They answered many of the questions that we had asked, on our 'Passports' which we filled in and sent to  the Academy earlier this year.

Bullying and Racism Work

Having been so touched by the Anne Frank story (see below)  we developed this to talk about bullying and racism; our experiences, fears and hopes.

We studied the work of  the African American painter Jacob Lawrence and drew oil pastel pictures in his style. Click the picture below to see a slide-show
of our work.

We each wrote  poem about some form of racism or bullying. Click the picture  below to read, and hear,
some of our poems.

We painted posters by which to get across our anti-racism and anti-bullying messages.
Click on the poster below to see a slide-show of all our posters.

Having written Miep Gies, (see below), we were thrilled, and moved, to receive this letter and  photograph
from Miep herself. She was a friend of the Frank family who helped to hide them from the Nazis. Following
their capture she found, and kept, Anne Frank's diaries, giving them, unread, to Anne's father Otto on his
release years later.

Trip to Gordon Highlanders Museum

P7 visited  Gordon Highlander Museum, it was a very interesting experience. We had a tour of the building. We got to look at the interesting artefacts, such as gas masks, telephones and water purifiers. We also got to meet some of the old soldiers and tried on uniforms. We learned a lot.

Reading Buddies

We have been doing 'Reading Buddies' with P.5.
We each brought in a newspaper article which we shared with each other and also a comic we enjoy.
This meant many of us read things we would not have looked at otherwise.

Anne Frank Research
and
Miep Gies' Birthday

We have been researching Anne Frank as part of our World War Two topic. We watched a documentary in which Miep Gies featured. Having watched in complete silence we all clapped at the end, inspired and moved by the story. Kiera and Rebecca found Miep Gies address. Miep is the person who looked after the Frank family while they were in hiding in the annexe.
We found out that Miep Gies birthday was on 15th February and that she would be 100 years old. All of P.7 signed  a birthday card for her and wrote  a letter. You can see from our comments what we feel about Miep's bravery.

Click on the letter below to read it in PDF format.

Caitlin's mum's friend had been to the annexe, where the Franks hid, and took back lots of pictures and a book about Anne Frank and her family.
Jessica, Elise and Kiera have been reading The Diary of Anne Frank at our Friday Book Club and also, most of P.7 have seen the recent TV programme about Anne's life, which was based on the book.

French Assembly

Bonjour!  P7 presented a French assembly on Friday the 23rd  January. We sang four songs and played
glockenspiel for two of them. We also did a play called ‘Le Petit Elephant’, there were seven animals in the play. One of the songs was called ‘Plume Plume’ and it was about a blackbird losing a total of six feathers. We also played the Snowman Beetle game; where we rolled the dice and each number was a part of the snowman’s body.
Then Thomas Booth and Jessica Gear took part in a play, it was about a boy (Thomas ) pretending to be sick
so he didn’t have to go to school and on Saturday he was really sick and could not go to the cinema to see
Shrek 2. Our last song was Frère Jacques Rock ‘n’ Roll.
