P.5 Mrs. Baillie

Euan Bruce, from Westhill came to speak to P.5 and P.6 about the importance of wearing a cycling helmet.
When he was only 14 he was cycling through a wood when he fell off his bike. Unfortunately he was not wearing a helmet and suffered severe head injuries. He was in  a coma for nine days and in hospital for 8 months. He missed a whole year of school.
Now in his mid-twenties, as a result of the accident, he has been left partially paralysed down his left side, has poor balance and partial vision.
He told the children about his accident and how important it is to wear a helmet, even if you are only riding your bike a short distance.
The children then did some work sheets on helmet safety and you can see some of their work below.

During January we read the book 'The Littlest Viking' by Sandi Toksvig. As part of the related work we have studied Viking homes, clothes, longboats, Gods and traditions. On the last Tuesday in January, each year, Shetlanders celebrate the fire festival of Up-Helly-Aa. We have been keeping a close eye on the press coverage of this year's event and looking into its links to their Viking Heritage.
The finale of the event is a huge torch lit procession behind a replica Viking Longship and at the end the marchers throw their flaming torches into the galley and watch as it burns to the ground. Our paintings depict the scenes as
 this happens.

Canoeing

We went to Summerhill Swimming pool, for  weekly sessions, to learn to canoe. Back in  school we wrote
Acrostic Poems reflecting how we felt about this new experience.
Below are some of our poems, Click to enlarge them.

Hockey
We have been learning to play hockey with Mrs. Mutch, Mrs. Baillie and Mrs. McHattie. The Hockey Development Officer, Kevin McNab came into school to help us further. Here are some of the children's comments:
Sophia said "Yes, I really enjoyed the hockey because it was really fun and a good form of exercise."
Michelle
said "I loved it because we got to learn new, different skills."
Ifechi said It was great and really fun" and Matthew said " It was exciting and we had to work well as a team."

Archeolink Visit

Two of the people from Archeolink visited the P.5s. They got to try on armour and practice marching like they did in Medieval times. They also learned how to braid.

Mrs. Baillie's class have been making origami photo frames and taking each others photographs to put in them, they are fantastic.
As their topic is Scotland they have drawn the national flower, the thistle, in oil pastels.

They have also made and coloured Celtic bookmarks in the Style and colours the Celts would have used.
